First Annual Coastal Discovery and Stewardship Month

Posted on  January 23, 2014

This February come out and celebrate the first annual Coastal Discovery and Stewardship Month all month long! The celebration will be dedicated to the history and preservation of California’s history, Highway 1 Discovery Route, and the country’s first Stewardship Travel Program. There will be a wide range of activities to participate in San Simeon whether you want to take an adventure to take in the beauty of the coast or learn about California’s heritage and marine life, and more! Local restaurants will even be participating and creating unique dishes that will help to celebrate and spread the awareness of environmentally responsible seafood eating.

One of the exciting activities taking place daily during the Coastal Discovery & Stewardship Month celebration will be Elephant Seals Docent Talks. The Piedras Blancas rookery, on Highway 1, is home to about 15,000 animals and is open for viewing every day of the year. This event will allow guests to see beautiful marine mammals up close and in their natural habitat along with being able to ask docents questions about the seals and more. This is a free event and is great for families and learning more about California’s magnificent marine mammals.

Another great event taking place during this celebration will be the Coastal Discovery Month & Stewardship Film Festival held at the Hearst Castle Theater. The Living Sea by MacGillibray Freeman Films will be screened every Saturday at 7pm throughout February, with the hopes of celebrating California’s aquatic and underwater life that are preserved within the National Marine Sanctuary System. This will be a great way to not only see beautiful aquatic animals but breathtaking views of deep ocean gardens, coral reefs and more that surround California’s coast.

Additionally, the Coastal Discovery Month will be celebrating San Simeon’s local heritage in food and wineries. The Stolo Family Winery and The Abalone Farm are helping to celebrate the Coastal Discovery Month by hosting The Best of the Coast: Abalone, Wine and Stewardship. This exciting event will inform guests about farming abalone off the coast and growing grapes close to the coast in Cambria. Not only will you get a chance to learn about abalone and wine, you’ll also be able to taste both as you watch chefs prepare two variations of abalone, complimented by various wines donated by The Stolo Family Winery along with fresh breads and local fruits and cheeses. This event will not only be informative and delicious but a great chance to donate to the Coastal Discovery Center in San Simeon as they will have stewardship donations available as well. Reserve your tickets for a great afternoon of food and stewardship celebrating San Simeon’s heritage!

The Coastal Discovery and Stewardship Month in San Simeon is sure to be a fun filled month with many informative and exciting events. Make sure not to miss out and indulge in California’s rich history!
