This March 17 – 19 explore stunning exhibits, plant sales, photography and floral arrangements at the 72nd Annual Santa Barbara International Orchid Show.

Orchid Mystique

With its elaborate local, regional and international orchid displays spanning over 22,000 square feet, this year the International Orchid Show will showcase everything from art demonstrations to edible petals. Held at the Earl Warren Showgrounds, over 80 exhibitors and vendors will be displaying their unique orchids March 17 –19 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. With this year’s theme being “Orchid Mystique”, there will be several orchids and activities expanding the boundaries of horticulture. Some notable species that will be making an appearance this year include Ophrys apifera, an orchid that mimics the look and scent of female bees, and the Vanilla Orchid, used in the commercial production of vanilla flavoring. In addition to the wide display of flowers, there will be several interactive exhibits hosted by the Santa Barbara Zoo as well as the “Orchid Doctor”, available to help anyone with their temperamental flowers. If you fall in love with the thousands of orchids and want one yourself, you can check out the Sales Area where attendees are able to purchase their own orchids, simple or exotic.

Tickets for this amazing exhibit range in prices and are offered in a variety of different ways. General daily admission is $14 and $12 for seniors and students. 1st Thursday in Santa Barbara

Posted on  February 20, 2017

1st Thursday in Santa Barbara

Have you ever wanted to explore a museum or art gallery, but can never decide on which one to choose? Then you should come to Santa Barbara’s 1st Thursday, on the first Thursday of any month, to experience a cultural atmosphere like no other, where a variety of venues display their work, for free!

About 1st Thursday

On the first Thursday of every month from 5-8pm, downtown Santa Barbara comes to life with free attractions like art openings, live music and even wine tastings. The cultural atmosphere is infectious as several downtown partners participate in this monthly event, providing performances and interactive exhibits for locals and visitors alike. Before heading downtown, you can download the detailed “1st Thursday Passport” from the Downtown Santa Barbara website that provides the locations of all of the participating venues along with a brief description of what each venue entails. Some notable venues include the Ensemble Theater Company, Museum of Contemporary Art and Keefrider Custom Furniture. For a complete list of 1st Thursday venues, click here. While February’s 1st Thursday’s theme was unsurprisingly called “A Little Romance”, the theme for the next 1st Thursday, March 2, is “MOVEMENT!”. If you don’t have enough time to attend this month, no worries! The fun will resume on the first Thursday of April, which will be April 6.

The Arts and Culture in Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara has long been a haven for creative spirits, dating back thousands of years. Many of the original inhabitants like the Native American Chumash tribe and the Spanish, had made lasting influences on the architecture and culture of Santa Barbara. The Chumash tribe was an incredibly artistic and talented group of people, weaving intricate baskets and painting symbolic rock paintings. These artistic influences definitely play a role in the hundreds of artists featured in downtown Santa Barbara’s museums and venues.

Downtown Santa Barbara’s 1st Thursday is a perfect opportunity for locals to mingle with neighbors and visitors to indulge in the rich, diverse culture of Santa Barbara. If you plan on spending the entire evening exploring what the downtown venues have to offer, then it might be a good idea to book a stay at the Inn at East Beach where you can complete your free, cultural experience with a reasonably priced night at a beautiful hotel.

Santa Barbara Parade of Lights at The Harbor

Posted on  November 16, 2016

Screen Shot 2016-11-16 at 12.29.03 PM

The Santa Barbara Parade of Lights is an event like no other, and a must-see this holiday season. Watch as Santa Barbara Harbor is electrified with lights, lasers and fireworks! Located just 2 miles up the coast, Broughton Hotels’ Inn at East Beach provides the perfect setting to end your Santa Barbara night.

The city of Santa Barbara is proud to present the 31st Annual Parade of Lights. For those not familiar with the event this is not your typical parade, rather than floats driving down a city street, decorated boats sail down the harbor. Saddle up and get ready for a hootin’ and hollerin’ good time as this year’s theme is “Wild West Holiday.”

The festivities begin with Santa’s Village at 3:00pm on City Pier. Fake snow blankets the pier to create a winter wonderland by the beach. Have your photo taken with the man who puts the “Santa” in Santa Barbara, Mr. Claus himself! Arrive early as the first 200 children will receive goodie bags.

At 5:30pm the main event begins. Approximately 25 boats will be shining bright on the Santa Barbara coastline, hoping to take home the first-place prize. Motor boats, sail boats and paddle boats look their best in holiday décor as they make their way to the judging area at Stearns Wharf. First, second and third place prizes are awarded in five categories including sail, powered and paddle. Stearns Wharf and the breakwater provide the best location to watch.

Stick around after the grand prize winner is crowned for the 7:00pm fireworks display.

Want to keep the party going? Numerous bars and restaurants in the area will welcome you for a drink or a bite to eat. Toma Restaurant and Bar is perfect if you’re in the mood for Italian. If you’d prefer a more casual dining experience, Lucky Penny will give you just that with some of the best pizza and sandwiches in Santa Barbara. And of course, there are restaurants selling fresh seafood at every corner. Brophy Bros., Santa Barbara Shellfish Company and Boathouse at Hendry’s Beach are a few recommendations.

Want to see what you’re in for? Click here to check out boats from past parades!

Norah Jones at the Santa Barbara Bowl

Posted on  October 4, 2016

Screen Shot 2016-09-28 at 4.59.34 PM

Make your way out to the Santa Barbara Bowl to take in the sounds of Norah Jones and her band! Located just 2-miles from the concert, Broughton’s boutique hotel the Inn at East Beach is the perfect place to stay after the show.

About Norah Jones

It is no real surprise that Norah Jones has done great things in the music industry. It was almost expected right from the beginning. Her father, Ravi Shankar, was a world renown musician and a huge influence on The Beatles’ George Harrison. Shankar passed his musical genes onto his daughter Norah and she has run with them.

Jones was a star pupil in the Jazz Piano program at North Texas University, being recognized for her skills as a vocalist and a composer. Upon completion of her college education she moved back to her birthplace of New York City, and began her rise in the music industry. Since releasing her debut album Come Away With Me in 2002, Norah Jones has been a song-writing force to be reckoned with.

Norah Jones is excited to be releasing her sixth studio album, titled Day Breaks, on October 7th. Lucky for us, she will be making a stop at the historic Santa Barbara Bowl at the end of the month. You won’t want to miss the nine-time Grammy winner as she performs hits such as Come Away With MeDon’t Know Why, and Sunrise, as well as fresh tunes from her much anticipated new album.

Day Breaks is a return to Norah’s jazz roots. “This new album feels full circle because I’m going back to my early influences,” stated Jones. Piano is prevalent throughout Day Breaks, as Jones composed these songs on a piano rather than a guitar. The twelve song album features nine original compositions, as well as Jones’ take on Duke Ellington, Horace Silver, and Neil Young.

Opening the show will be solo artist Valerie June, with her very own brand, which she calls “organic moonshine roots music.” June takes listeners on a journey through darkness and solitude to warmheartedness and charm with her songs. Throughout her early years, June was a regular attendee at a church where everyone sang. There was not a traditional choir, so everyone in attendance took on that duty. Valerie paid close attention to how people sang, and what she liked about their voices. Her fellow churchgoers inspired her to develop into the singer that she is today.

The show will take place on Thursday, October 27th, at 7:00pm. Tickets are on sale now, starting at $48.00. Click here to get your tickets now, and claim a spot for what is sure to be an incredible show.

Stay up to date with upcoming events at the Santa Barbara Bowl by following them on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram.

Summer Concerts at the Santa Barbara Bowl

Posted on  July 8, 2016

Jazz guitar player performing

There’s a lot happening this summer at the Santa Barbara Bowl, and you don’t want to miss it! Located less than 2-miles from the venue, Broughton’s Inn at East Beach is the perfect place to spend your California getaway.

About the Santa Barbara Bowl

The Santa Barbara Bowl was built in 1936 as a WPA project on a budget of $80,000 for the Santa Barbara community’s Fiesta pageant. Nestled on a hillside above downtown Santa Barbara, the Santa Barbara Bowl is one of the most scenic and intimate amphitheaters in the world. In 1981, a handful of music enthusiasts envisioned its potential as a major music venue and formed the Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation in an attempt to make their dream a reality. Fast forward to 1994, the Foundation took over management of the venue and began the long renovation process- booking larger acts and undertaking basic facility upgrades and amenities. However, it wasn’t until 2004 that the Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation’s Board of Directors committed to undertaking the massive $40 million Renovation and Restoration Facility Master Plan. Over 600 individuals, corporations and foundations, the State of California and the City and County of Santa Barbara all contributed to the campaign, and in 2012 it was finally completed- transforming the bowl into a magnificent venue, unrivaled in setting and quality.

Experience the magic yourself- come see your favorite artists at the Santa Barbara Bowl this summer! Some scheduled events in the upcoming months feature:
