95th Annual Santa Barbara Holiday Parade

Posted on  November 3, 2017

Santa Barbara Holiday Parade

The holiday season is approaching! This means Christmas tree lightings, holiday music, hot chocolate, and for the 65th year, the Downtown Santa Barbara Holiday Parade! On December 1, line the streets of Santa Barbara with more than 65,000 other spectators as the city kicks off its only annual nighttime parade!

The Holiday Parade

The parade will begin Friday, December 1at 6:30pm. It will take place in downtown Santa Barbara on State Street and will stretch from Sola to Cota. The parade kicks off the holiday season in Santa Barbara and will feature high-stepping marching bands, fantastic themed floats, performance groups, a Grand Marshall (to be announced) and much more! Last year’s Co-Grand Marshalls of the parade were Cody and Caleb Walker, brothers of the late Paul Walker. The Holiday Prince and Fairy, selected from child applicants who submit artwork best capturing the parade’s theme, lead the parade and light up the street throughout the parade route! The theme for the parade this year is “Colors of the Season.” As an attendee, expect to see a kaleidoscope of vibrant colors during the festivities!

History of the Parade

In the 1950s, a tradition began to decorate State Street with 40 feet tall Christmas trees during the holidays. The trees were officially dedicated during the Children’s Christmas Tree Parade, which is now know as the Downtown Holiday Parade, and held annually one week after Thanksgiving. Since then, the parade has evolved into Santa Barbara’s only nighttime parade, changing its debut from Saturday morning to Friday evening in 1998.

Positions in the Parade

Every year, a Grand Marshall is selected to host the parade. The Grand Marshall is usually a celebrity or icon that captures the heart of Santa Barbara or the surrounding area. A Holiday Prince and a Holiday Fairy are also selected from a pool of applicants. Applicants must be between the ages of 6-10 and submit a piece of artwork that judges believe best captures the theme of the parade for the year. The Holiday Prince and Fairy lead the parade route to preserve the parade’s origins as the Children’s Christmas Tree Parade.

As you prepare for this spectacular night filled with brilliant colors and holiday spirit, don’t forget to book a place to stay! Consider the beautiful boutique hotel, Inn at East Beach. With its warm, comfortable beds and luxurious amenities, this hotel will provide all of the relaxation and comfort you need after a long parade night.

I Madonnari 2017 | Street Painting Festival

Posted on  April 20, 2017

I Madonnari Street Painting Festival

Have you ever witnessed pavement transform into a sea of vibrant colors right before your eyes? From May 27 – May 29 experience exactly that by visiting Santa Barbara for the annual I Madonnari Street Painting Festival, featuring pastel street art and authentic Italian cuisine.

What to Expect

As you (and 25,000 others) approach Old Mission Plaza, prepare to be awe-inspired by one of the most elaborate street mosaics in the United States with artists, young and old, covering the pavement in pastel masterpieces. While professional artists are selected to decorate the larger squares, families can purchase 2-by-2 feet squares for $12 where the little artists of the family can take part in the festivities. In addition to the street displays, an authentic Italian market will be adjacent to the plaza, offering an array of Italian dishes while live music plays in the background to complete the festival atmosphere.

Where It All Started

I Madonnari unsurprisingly originated in Italy when artists in the 16th century, called “Madonnari” traveled around the country aiding in the construction of monuments during the Renaissance by sketching engravings on the ground for the builders to see. As the monuments were finished, these artists sought another way to make a living and began recreating church paintings or popular subjects onto the pavement; these recreations led to numerous donations from locals and visitors that admired their work. The Madonnari moved through provinces during festival seasons and their popularity quickly spread, eventually resulting in modern festivals like I Madonnari in Santa Barbara.

Sponsor a Square, Support Arts Education

Not only does I Madonnari pay homage to its rich Italian roots, but it also supports young aspiring artists across Santa Barbara. Prior to the festival, individuals have the opportunity to sponsor a street square as advertising for a business or to celebrate a family member or friend. Sponsors can choose squares ranging in size from 4-by-6 feet for $150, to 12-by-12 feet for $700. Regardless of the square size chosen, all proceeds from the festival (including proceeds from vendors) benefit the Children’s Creative Project, a nonprofit arts education program that provides visual and performing arts workshops to over 50,000 children in more than 100 local schools.

Whether you’re sponsoring a square, decorating the pavement or just soaking in the festival culture, you won’t have to travel far for a place to stay! Conveniently located just ten minutes away from Old Mission Plaza, the affordable Inn at East Beach will provide everything you need for relaxation after enjoying a day at I Madonnari.

1st Thursday in Santa Barbara

Posted on  February 20, 2017

1st Thursday in Santa Barbara

Have you ever wanted to explore a museum or art gallery, but can never decide on which one to choose? Then you should come to Santa Barbara’s 1st Thursday, on the first Thursday of any month, to experience a cultural atmosphere like no other, where a variety of venues display their work, for free!

About 1st Thursday

On the first Thursday of every month from 5-8pm, downtown Santa Barbara comes to life with free attractions like art openings, live music and even wine tastings. The cultural atmosphere is infectious as several downtown partners participate in this monthly event, providing performances and interactive exhibits for locals and visitors alike. Before heading downtown, you can download the detailed “1st Thursday Passport” from the Downtown Santa Barbara website that provides the locations of all of the participating venues along with a brief description of what each venue entails. Some notable venues include the Ensemble Theater Company, Museum of Contemporary Art and Keefrider Custom Furniture. For a complete list of 1st Thursday venues, click here. While February’s 1st Thursday’s theme was unsurprisingly called “A Little Romance”, the theme for the next 1st Thursday, March 2, is “MOVEMENT!”. If you don’t have enough time to attend this month, no worries! The fun will resume on the first Thursday of April, which will be April 6.

The Arts and Culture in Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara has long been a haven for creative spirits, dating back thousands of years. Many of the original inhabitants like the Native American Chumash tribe and the Spanish, had made lasting influences on the architecture and culture of Santa Barbara. The Chumash tribe was an incredibly artistic and talented group of people, weaving intricate baskets and painting symbolic rock paintings. These artistic influences definitely play a role in the hundreds of artists featured in downtown Santa Barbara’s museums and venues.

Downtown Santa Barbara’s 1st Thursday is a perfect opportunity for locals to mingle with neighbors and visitors to indulge in the rich, diverse culture of Santa Barbara. If you plan on spending the entire evening exploring what the downtown venues have to offer, then it might be a good idea to book a stay at the Inn at East Beach where you can complete your free, cultural experience with a reasonably priced night at a beautiful hotel.
