Chinese New Year in Chicago

Chicago is known for its many festivals and celebrations but one of its largest citywide events is the Chinese New Year celebration. With a massive parade full of colorful displays and eclectic performances, Chicago’s Chinese New Year is one party that you don’t want to miss.

This Year’s Events

During this upcoming week, Chicago is hosting several events to finish up the New Year celebration. On Feb 4, the Argyle Lunar New Year Parade will start at 1pm featuring music, colorful dances and countless floats. The parade is free to attend and will begin underneath the CTA Argyle red line station. The Chinese New Year Parade will be held the following day, Feb 5, starting 12pm in Chinatown. Celebrate the Year of the Rooster with over 30,000 attendees including marching bands, lion dance performances and the iconic 100-foot paper dragon. Later in the week on Feb 9, come watch the 2016 film, New Year’s Eve of Old Lee at the Asian Pop-Up Cinema located at the Claudia Cassidy Theater. The film will be played in Mandarin Chinese with English subtitles. On Feb 12, the Chinese New Year celebrations will come to a close with the annual Chinese Lantern Festival. Starting at 12pm, the Crystal Gardens will be transformed with festivities including vendors, culinary sampling, martial arts performances and music. For a complete list of the upcoming Chinese New Year events, click here.

The Year of the Rooster

Each year in the Chinese calendar is characterized by one of the twelve Chinese zodiac animals, this year being the rooster. So, what does this mean for you? People born during this year are said to be honest, energetic and intelligent, however can also be perceived as vain and arrogant. A strong work ethic and conscious health decisions are recommended for everyone during this Year of the Rooster.

History of the Chinese New Year Celebration

The celebration of the Chinese New Year has been around for an incredibly long time, dating back as far as 14th century BC. During this time, and the years to follow, the New Year was heavily and seriously celebrated amongst the Chinese population. In fact, when the New Year arrived, business life in China came to a near halt as families came together to thoroughly clean their homes for much anticipated visits from their gods. In recent years, the name Chinese New Year has actually shifted to “Spring Festival”, however, despite the change, the holiday is still widely celebrated, especially in the city of Chicago.

So, what are you waiting for? The party has already started, but it’s not over yet! Head to Chicago to join the celebration and afterwards, stay to relax at the luxurious Majestic Hotel, conveniently located near the festivities.

Chicago Beer Festival Returning to Field Museum

Posted on  January 23, 2017

Chicago Beer Festival

When you hear the word Chicago, several associated ideas are probably conjured within your mind like Chicago Cubs, deep dish pizza or theater. Yet, while the Windy City is famous for many things, it is also undoubtedly known for its large and successful craft beer festivals. Whether you are a casual drinker or beer connoisseur, the annual Chicago Beer Festival will have a taste that is right for you.

The Festival

The Chicago Beer Festival will be returning to the Field Museum this year on March 4 at 8:00 p.m., where you can sample over 70 breweries’ spring seasonal beers while enjoying music and delicious food provided by local vendors. During the event, select exhibits within the museum will be open for attendees to explore while drinking their favorite craft beers. As one of the best and largest beer festivals in Chicago, both international and domestic breweries will be in attendance including companies like Brooklyn Brewery and Small Town Brewery.

Tickets

General admission tickets can be purchased for $45, however for additional specialty beers and early entry to the event, VIP admission can be requested for $55. Tickets will not be available at the door and consequently must be purchased online. Forty taste vouchers will be given to each attendee and food can be purchased throughout the venue.

In the past, the Chicago Beer Festival has been held at Union Station’s Great Hall, but due to construction two years ago, the location of the festival has since then been changed to the Field Museum which is located right next to Soldier Field. Despite the change in location, interest in the event has not faltered- last year, hundreds of guests attended the festival, in addition to nearly 70 beer vendors and several food vendors. The excitement and attendance is expected to be even greater this year and there’s no reason that you shouldn’t join in on the fun!

After the event, save yourself from a long Uber ride home and instead, stay at the comfortable and relaxing Majestic Hotel located on West Brompton. Seize this opportunity to escape the Chicago rain and purchase your tickets online before it’s too late.

Posted on  October 10, 2016

Screen Shot 2016-10-17 at 2.01.59 PM

Chicago, are you ready? The biggest, coolest, greatest, tastiest, cheesiest event of the year is making its return to the windy city! The Mac & Cheese Fest will be back for its third installment on Saturday, November 5th. Just a short drive along the coast of Lake Michigan, the boutique Majestic Hotel is a perfect place to stay after you’re done feasting for the day.

What’s happening

If you asked around, you would find it difficult to come across someone who does not enjoy mac and cheese. People young and old, from all walks of life love the cheesy goodness that the dish provides. A love story like no other, macaroni and cheese have been together since the 14th century, withstanding the test of time, and tasting oh so good doing it. It is only appropriate that we celebrate this epic love story with a feast fit for kings.

The first Saturday of November will be one to remember for cheese lovers from around the country. In 2015, over 4,000 attended Chicago’s culinary convention for all things cheese and macaroni. Those who chose to stay home missed out on all the fun: don’t let that happen again this year.

Chicago’s top chefs will bring you everything from basic macaroni and cheese to chorizo macarón con queso and mac and cheese martinis! There’s something for everyone, with plenty of eccentric takes on your favorite childhood dish for those with an adventurous pallet.

Two separate sessions will take place, beginning at noon with the lunch session, and followed by the dinner session at 6:00pm. Two different types of tickets are available, with General Admission and VIP options.

2016 Halloween Gathering Festival and Parade

Posted on  September 19, 2016

Halloween

October is approaching, and that means that Halloween is right around the corner! Last year, over 200,000 people made their way down to the Chicago Cultural Mile to take in the sights and sounds of the inaugural Halloween Gathering Festival and Parade. Just a short drive along the coast of Lake Michigan, the boutique Majestic Hotel is a perfect place to stay after taking in Chicago’s must see Halloween event.

There is certainly no lack of creativity in the Windy City. The vastly diverse creative communities are made up of expressionists from all walks of life. Imaginative, inspiring, and inventive, these individuals believe expressing themselves through their art is the key to a happy soul.

2015 was the first Halloween Gathering, and it garnered rave reviews. Claims are being made that 2016’s affair will be even bigger and better, which means you won’t want to miss it! Taking place just nine days prior to All Hallows’ Eve, the festival and parade are sure to raise your Halloween spirits.

What’s happening

During the day, Millennium Park will be brimming with live performers, face painters, makers, and demonstrators. A children’s parade will get the day started, so bring the little ones in their best Halloween attire. Ghosts, Ghouls, Princesses, and Superheroes will make their trek through the park for all to see. Dance presentations, musical acts, comedians, and theater performers will take the stages to show festivalgoers the routines they worked so diligently to perfect.

As the sun begins to set, the creative contingents prepare to perform for the main events. Last year, ten-foot tall dinosaur skeleton puppets charged down the street, while a mariachi band played a piece, decked out in full Day of the Dead fashion. Ghastly Halloween scenes rolled by in truck beds, and dancers reenacted Michael Jackson’s Thriller music video. Who knows what we’ll see this year?
