16th Annual Gene Cerise Country Coast Classic Bike Ride in Cambria

Cyclist man riding mountain bike in sunny day .

Hop on your bike and come cycle the beautiful Central Coast of California while supporting the community’s youth at the 16th Annual Gene Cerise Country Coast Classic Bike Ride in Cambria, California! Located less than 5-miles from the race’s starting point, Broughton’s boutique hotel The Morgan is the perfect place to stay for the weekend of June 24th.

About the Gene Cerise Country Coast Classic Bike Ride

In 2001, Gene Cerise, an avid cyclist, started the Country Coast Classic Bike Ride as a fundraiser for the Cambria Youth Center. Gene succumbed to leukemia in 2004, but his legacy lives on today through this volunteer-driven event promoting the positive development of youth in the community. Beat the heat and enjoy the cool air and breathtaking scenery of the Central Coast while you cycle to help us reach our goal of $25,000 to fund and support programs for the youth of Cambria, Cayucos, and San Simeon. There are three different routes for cyclists to choose from:

1.    Century (100-miles)-

This ride provides 100-miles of challenge for advanced cyclists. The route winds over Highway 46 to the Paso Robles’ wine country and the Pinedorado Grounds in Cambria for lunch. There is approximately 6,811 feet of climbing, including 5-miles of 6% gradient to the 1,762’ summit of Highway 46. Well-supplied rest stops await at your morning ride at the summit and at Hunt Cellars Winery. Only experienced cyclists should attempt this ride.

  • Registration fee: $65 adults, $25 youth (12&under)
  • Suggested start time: 7-9am
  • Creekside Garden Café will open at 6am for riders who want a breakfast before their trip
  • A complimentary luncheon will be held at Pinedorado Grounds between 11:30-1pm (century riders only)

2.   ½ Century (50-miles)-

A 50-mile intermediate ride with a bit of a challenge. Pedal up Highway 1 from the Pinedorado Grounds to Ragged Point and back. This route has one hard hill, with a climb of 300 feet at the end. You should be comfortable riding sections of roadway with minimal shoulder. You will be reminded to ride single file on the most northerly section of this route. There are well-supplied rest stops at the midway point and at the Ragged Point turnaround.

  • Registration fee: $60 adults, $25 youth (12&under)
  • Suggested start time: 9-10am

3.    Short Ride (25-miles)-

Fun, short, and sweet! A gentle ride starting from Cambria’s Pinedorado Grounds up the coast to the Elephant Seal Rookery and back. Ride the whole way for 25-miles. This is a great choice for families since this section of Highway 1 has wide shoulders. A well-supplied rest stop awaits you at the Vista Point turnaround.

  • Registration fee: $55 adults, $25 youth (12&under)
  • Suggested start time: 9-10am

Register now online or by mail! Check-in for riders will be available on Friday, June 24th from 4-5:30pm at the Cambria Connection or from 6:30-10am at Pinedorado Grounds on the day of the race. Parking will be available in the Veteran’s Memorial Building parking lot next to the Pinedorado Grounds or along both sides of Main Street. Riders are free to begin the race after check-in at their own convenience, however, all riding courses close at 5pm. Those who cannot complete the course in the allotted time will be offered a SAG ride to the starting point (riders who turn down the ride will be on their own).

A post-ride BBQ meal will be served back at the Pinedorado Grounds from 2:30-5:30pm offering riders a salad, drink, bread, an entrée with the choice of salmon, chicken, tri-tip, or veggie lasagna and dessert (admission included in registration fee). Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery

Posted on  February 5, 2016

elephant seals

Experience more than 23,000 of the largest seals in the northern hemisphere along a 6-mile stretch of coastline at the Piedras Blancas elephant seal rookery! Located just 10 minutes from the rookery, Broughton’s boutique hotel the Morgan is the perfect place to stay for a weekend getaway in San Simeon.

About the Elephant Seal

The northern elephant seal is the largest seal in the northern hemisphere and second largest seal in the world. Adult males measure 14-16ft in length and weigh in around 4,000-5,000lbs, whereas adult females are much smaller: measuring 9-12ft in length and weighing around 900-1,800lbs. Elephant seals derive their name from their great size and the male’s large nose, which serves to intimidate other males through both its size and effect on their loud challenge call while competing for females.

Elephant seals spend 8 to 10 months of the year out in the open ocean, coming to shore only twice a year: in the winter for birthing and breeding season and in the late spring/early summer to molt and grow new fur. The birthing and breeding season takes place December through March, with a majority of males arriving in December to lay claim to a section of the beach and assert their dominance through intimidation and an occasional battle. The majority of pregnant females arrive in January and give birth a few days later. Females nurse their pups for 4 weeks, and during the last week of nursing they go into estrous and copulate with the males in the dominance group. Shortly thereafter, the mother goes to sea: leaving her pup behind.

March is a very active month at the Piedras Blancas elephant seal rookery. If you arrive at the beginning of the month, you may still be able to catch the seals in the birthing and breeding season. At the end of March, the molting season begins and the seals begin to return to the beach. Three-quarters of a million visitors from all over the world travel to the rookery to experience these magnificent animals. Come visit the Piedras Blancas elephant seal rookery and speak to a docent with Friends of the Elephant Seal to learn more!
