The Georgian Hotel Celebrates 80 Years

Posted on  September 12, 2013

1933 was a highlight reel of homegrown American history for many reasons. King Kong premiered at Radio City Music Hall. Construction began on the Golden Gate Bridge. Prohibition was repealed. And, in Los Angeles’ coastal city of Santa Monica, The Georgian Hotel was born. This year The Georgian will celebrate 80 years of hospitality heritage in Santa Monica, ushering in a new decade while reflecting on the century that made it a West Coast icon.

The Great Depression had the American economy on its knees in the early 1930s, leaving Santa Monica hoteliers and restaurateurs clawing for traction. Franklin Roosevelt was elected President, and through him the New Deal penned but still in its infancy stages. The Georgian Hotel was born into this adversity, and amazingly survived, a feat some might call baptism by fire. The hotel flourished over time as the decades passed and the Santa Monica cityscape changed, with neighboring hotels coming and going.

To celebrate its 80th, The Georgian Hotel is pairing with the Santa Monica Conservancy to throw a special Anniversary Affair on October 16th. 100% of all ticket sales will benefit the Conservancy, the only local, non-governmental organization focused entirely on preserving Santa Monica’s heritage. Tickets can be purchased here for a party highlighted by retro cocktails, 30’s fashion, live music, prohibition drinks, and magic.

Built as an intimate seaside hideaway for Hollywood’s elite, The Georgian Hotel has become a destination for local and international visitors seeking out LA’s coast. The Art Deco design of the structure pays homage to a distant era revered and romanticized in pop culture today, highlighted by bold shapes and even bolder colors. Drawing on its Prohibition roots, The Georgian is home to one of Los Angeles’ first Speakeasy bars, which still exists today with a nondescript alley-way entry. Those who know the way in are greeted with rich red booths, retro wood paneling, and the electric rush of discretion. The Georgian Speakeasy may or may not be available for private events and parties… off the record, interested persons may want to call 310-395-9945.
