2014 Santa Barbara International Film Festival
The 2014 Santa Barbara International Film Festival will return to the area this January! The film festival begins Thursday, January 30th and will run through Sunday, February 9th with an amazing line up of films representing 60 countries. The Santa Barbara International Film Festival is one of the most highly regarded festivals that brings together independent filmmakers, actors and more from around the world to celebrate the film industry.
The festival this year, in its 29th edition, will kick off at the legendary Arlington Theatre with the world premiere of the film Blue Mission, directed by Fisher Stevens and Robert Nixon. This film follows oceanographer Sylvia Earle and is a combination of an adventure film and a biography that follows Earle on her mission to save the ocean.
The festival will close with the critically acclaimed Before Trilogy: Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and Before Midnight
Before Midnight will close out the festival at night followed by an in-depth conversation with co-screenwriters Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy and Richard Linklater, who also directed the film. This trilogy follows an unlikely love story of a couple who meet on multiple chance encounters and follows them on their journey of love and time.
Many great names in the film industry will be honored
Awards such as the Cinema Vanguard Award presented to actor Leonardo DiCaprio and director Martin Scorsese for their significant and unique contributions to the film industry. Another honoree of the night is Cate Blanchett for the Outstanding Performer of the Year award for her performance in Woody Allen’s Jasmine. Many more names in the industry will be honored with awards such as Oprah, Emma Thompson, Robert Redford and Kirk Douglas. The lineup for the event will not only include movie premieres and award ceremonies but seminars on filmmaking as well.
Some of these seminars include topics spanning from breaking into the industry, representing women of color, social justice and more. The city of Santa Barbara will be abuzz as well during the festival offering a screenwriting and filmmaking competition along with local filmmakers showcasing and discussing some of their original works.

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival has also been selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to be an official Academy Award qualifying festival, allowing winners of the Bruce Corwin Awards for Best Live Action Short under 30 Minutes and Best Animation Short Film to be nominated for the Oscars.
