About Chicago’s Memorial Day Parade

Get dressed in your best patriotic colors and join thousands of people as they line the streets to experience one of the largest Memorial Day parades in the nation. Dating back to 1870, Chicago’s Memorial Day Parade has a rich history, full of marching bands, a drum and bugle corps, and many other musical attractions. The parade commemorates veterans and fallen soldiers, often with ceremonies honoring veterans who have returned from wars as heroes.

Kick off the parade at the annual Wreath Laying Ceremony. The ceremony begins at 11am and is held at the Eternal Flame on Daley Plaza (Dearborn and Washington Streets). Gold Star family members are identified by the Gold Star Lapel Pin and the Next of Kin Lapel Pin that are presented to families who have lost a loved one in the United States Armed Forces to combat operations or while on active duty. Approved by Congress beginning in 1947, the Gold Star Pins are not an award, but symbols of honor worn by family members in remembrance of their fallen loved ones and the ultimate sacrifice they made. Once the Wreath Laying Ceremony is complete, the Memorial Day Parade will take off at noon and proceed south on State Street from Lake Street to Van Buren Street.

Admission to the parade is free! Due to the high volume of traffic from the parade, public transportation is highly recommended. For more travel information, click here.
