Hearst Castle History and Features

William Randolph Hearst, son of George and Phoebe Hearst, was best known for his influence in media, publishing and politics. Growing up in a wealthy family, William was a privileged child that developed a love for art and architecture early in his life. At the age of 10, William traveled to Europe with his mother and fell in love with the castles he toured. His dream was to own one of his own. In 1947, thanks to the help of architect Julia Morgan, his childhood dream finally became a reality. Although William grew ill and passed away in 1951 at the age of 88, he resided in the castle throughout its 28 years of construction.

Today, the Hearst Castle is a National and California Historical Landmark. Almost completely covered in one-of-a-kind works of art, the 165 room, 127 acre estate is also home to the Neptune pool. Standing at 104 feet long and holding 345,000 gallons of water, the Neptune pool is one of the most famous attributes of the Hearst Castle. Other notable sites in the Hearst castle include the two-room Wine Cellar from the Prohibition Era, the private Hearst Airport, the remnants of world’s former largest private Zoo, and the acres of serene gardens that surround the castle.

Located just off of the scenic Highway 1 on the Central California Coast, take a trip into the majestic hills and stop at the Hearst Castle for an enchanted evening.
