Helpful Tips for Navigating Monterey’s Farmers’ Markets
In the Monterey area, you won’t be hard-pressed to find amazing farmers’ markets on nearly every day of the week. Both big and small, Monterey’s markets feature a variety of local vendors selling an abundance of fresh produce, handcrafted hot foods and other unique goods. Here’s a few helpful tips for successfully navigating Monterey’s market scene.
Pick Your Market
Each of Monterey’s farmers’ markets are slightly different from one another, so make sure to do your research and choose the one that best fits you and your schedule. Here are three major markets:
- Marina Farmers’ Market: This market sets up shop every Sunday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at 215 Reservation Road in the Marina Village Shopping Center. Expect a wide range of local farmers offering a variety of quality products.
- Pacific Grove Farmers’ Market: The Pacific Grove Farmers’ Market is open every Monday from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. and features small-scale family farmers and local businesses. This market also hosts special events throughout the year, like a tree lighting ceremony in December and cooking demonstrations in the spring.
- The Farmers’ Market at Old Monterey Marketplace: Established in 1991, this market boasts a lengthy history of popular markets. It’s held on Tuesdays from 4p.m. – 8 p.m. and is one of the largest gatherings of people in Monterey County. World-renowned vendors and over 10,000 locals and visitors frequent this market.
Find Out What’s In Season
Fresh fruits and veggies are definitely not hard to find in California. But, it’s still smart to know which ones are at the peak of their season when you visit. The Monterey Bay Farmers’ Market Seasonal Guide is an especially helpful tool. In the next few months, vegetables like artichokes, beets and brussels sprouts will be in season. You’ll also find plenty of avocados, grapefruit and mandarins. Check the guide for a full list of what’s in-season.
Bring Plenty of Bags
It’s best to assume that not every vendor will have bags to give you. So, come prepared with both large carrying bags and smaller ones for individual items you might want to keep separate. They’ll make life much easier while shopping, trust us!
Chat With the Vendors
Farmers’ markets are so much more than just a grocery shopping trip! Take your time perusing all the goods being offered and have conversations with the local vendors. Forming relationships with the farmers and vendors makes for an especially rewarding experience – you might even get insider recommendations for other places to check out while in the area.
