Have you ever seen a really amazing event or location on TV and wished that you could go there? Well, now you can! This June 9, visit Chicago for the annual Ribfest. Ranked by USA Today as one of the 10 best fests and featured on Food Network’s “Eating America, with Anthony Anderson”, Ribfest will make any meat-lover’s dream come true with an endless supply of barbeque and live entertainment.
From Friday, June 9 – Sunday, June 11 rib vendors and rib lovers will fill Lincoln Avenue for the annual Ribfest. Contrary to what you might think, Ribfest entails much more than just barbeque vendors along a street- with plenty of food, constant live music, ice cold beer and a designated kids’ area, it’s no wonder that this festival is so popular every year! On Friday, visitors can witness Ribmania VIII, the festival’s annual rib eating contest where past contestants ate as much as 5lbs of meat in 8 minutes. For families visiting Chicago, Ribfest also has the Kids Square, including live entertainment, inflatables and free activities to ensure that every member of the family has a great time. Throughout the entire weekend live music will be playing featuring a variety of original bands belonging to genres like country, rock and indie.
2017 Vendors TBD
While the Ribfest coordinators are still working hard to confirm the official 2017 vendor lineup, we can look at last year’s vendors for an idea of what to expect this year. In 2016, Ribfest hosted 15 rib vendors, all competing for the coveted “People’s Choice” Rib Award. Q BBQ Lakeview secured the first place finish with Mr. B’s BBQ coming in second and Austin’s Texas Lighting taking third. All vendors will offer a variety of small or large plates featuring their best barbeque for guests to enjoy and judge. Even if you aren’t a huge meat eater, Ribfest can still be for you! Several vendors will accommodate to vegetarians, gluten-free and other dietary needs. These specific options will be highlighted in the menus posted on the “Ribs and More” page of the website during the month of May.
While Ribfest technically does not have an admission cost, $10/person or $20/family is the requested and suggested donation. All gate donations go towards the Northcenter community and directly support local schools, nonprofit organizations, economic development, green efforts and community family events. Since its inception, Ribfest has provided nearly $350,000 in cash grants to local neighborhood organizations. Food and beverages can only be purchased through tickets, not cash. Food and drink tickets are $1 each- most food items will cost between 4-12 tickets and beer ranges from 6-7 tickets.
Fear that you’ll be too full of barbeque and beer to travel home right away? Fortunately, we have a solution for you! During Ribfest weekend, book a stay in the beautiful Majestic Hotel. With its classic charm and close location to Lincoln Park, the Majestic provides a quiet escape from the exciting festival whenever you need it.
