Santa Barbara Museum of Art: Delacroix and the Matter of Finish
The Santa Barbara Museum of Art is currently hosting an exciting exhibit on the painter Eugène Delacroix called Delacroix and the Matter of Finish. Delacroix is best known for his painting Liberty Leading the People, but this exhibit showcases his previously unknown work The Last Words of Marcus Aurelius along with other pieces by Delacroix and his students.
The exhibit’s unique set-up allows observers to make side-by-side comparisons of Delacroix’s work and even view the art more closely and intimately with the aid of iPads.
Due to the pieces’ magnitude and European home, it has been over a decade since Delacroix’s works have been displayed in the U.S. This exhibit allows U.S. visitors the rare opportunity to experience Delacroix’s work in person. The exhibit also helps reveal another facet of Delacroix’s identity as not only a French Romantic artist but one that worked in Neoclassicism as well.
Delacroix and the Matter of Finish is a beautiful and compelling showcase of Delacroix’s talent and is one, if you’re in the U.S, you may not see for a while. If you’re in the Santa Barbara area make sure to schedule time to visit this exhibit and also enjoy the other beautiful pieces in the museum as well.
