About The Rose Bowl
Known as the oldest of bowls, the Pasadena Tournament of Roses started a college legacy in 1902 with the first Rose Bowl game at Tournament Park where Midwestern Michigan clobbered Stanford 49-0. Since then, the game has been home to 19 Heisman trophy winners, produced 29 national champions, featured 208 consensus All-Americans, and honored 113 college football legends by inducting them into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame. The Rose Bowl Stadium is a National Historic Landmark built in 1922. The stadium has earned its world-class reputation by hosting the annual Rose Bowl Game, Super Bowl games, Olympic soccer matches, World Cups, BCS National Championship games and numerous other events.
This collegiate classic has been the occasion of many firsts! The Rose Bowl Game was the occasion of:
- 1926- The first local radio broadcast of an East-West bowl game
- 1927- The first transcontinental radio broadcast of a sporting event
- 1948- The first local telecast of a college football game
- 1952- The first national telecast of a college football game
- 1962- The first coast-to-coast color telecast of a collegiate football game
