Sunsets and Whale Watching Make a Perfect Combination in San Simeon
San Simeon, California, is well-known for its scenery and sightseeing opportunities. One of the town’s especially scenic spots is the Piedras Blancas Light Station. This 140-year old lighthouse is an attraction in itself and a great spot for whale-watching!
Sunset and Whale Watching Event March 14th
On March 14th, Piedras Blancas Light Station is hosting a special sunset and whale watching event. For $15 a person, guests will have the opportunity to explore the historic light-station, get great views of a sunset over the Pacific Ocean and hopefully catch a glimpse of some migrating gray whales. Reservations for the event are required, for more information call 805-924-1807.
Other tours of Piedras Blancas are offered throughout the year on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, but not on federal holidays.
The gray whale is a variety of whale common to the Pacific coast, which grows to a length of roughly 49 feet and about 36 tons. Its biggest claim to fame is that it has the longest migration route of any mammal! Ranging from its breeding grounds near Baja California peninsula all the way to its biggest source of food in the Bering Sea near Alaska, the gray whale travels over 10,000 miles during it’s annual round-trip. Luckily for nature enthusiasts, this route happens to pass right by San Simeon offering tourists spectacular views in February and March.
About Piedras Blancas Light Station
Point Piedras Blancas has long been used as a landmark for marine navigation. Even before the light station was built there in 1875, the point was known for its distinctive white rocks which were frequently used to help sailors avoid disaster. In fact, that geological anomaly is where the area gets its name, “Piedras Blancas” being a Spanish phrase for “white rocks.”
Today, Piedras Blancas Light Station is a tourism hotspot and is operated by the Bureau of Land Management and the Piedras Blancas Light Station Association. It actually just celebrated its 140th anniversary on Valentines day of this year!
