About The Festival of Chariots
The Festival of Chariots originated 5,000 years ago in India in a city called Jagannatha Puri. Also known as Ratha Yatra, the festival celebrates Lord Krishna’s return to Vrindabana and is held annually to honor Lord Jagannatha, Lord of the Universe. Lord Jagannatha, a Deity form of Lord Krishna, has been worshipped by the people of Puri for many centuries. There are 3 chariots present at the festivities, each representing a Deity to be worshipped: Lord Jagannatha, Lord Balarama and Lady Subhadra. The chariots are canopied, decorated by flowers and balloons and pulled with long, thick ropes by hundreds of people attending the festival. Accompanied by a procession of ecstatically dancing devotees chanting the Lord’s Holy Names, the Festival of Chariots is an experience you don’t want to miss out on!
The 40th Annual Festival of Chariots in Los Angeles is presented by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). ISKCON is an incorporated religion and legal charitable non-profit institution derived in 1966 with the aim of preserving spiritual culture and helping every living human being serve Krishna. The festival will commence at 10am on Sunday, August 7th at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. The parade will proceed south on Main Street toward the Ocean Front Walk Plaza at Venice Beach, arriving at Venice Beach at noon. In addition to the parade, the Festival of Chariots also includes a free feast, entertainment and exhibit booths displaying the rich culture of India. A detailed event schedule with more information will be posted here as the day of the festival rapidly approaches.
